Brunching with Bellinis: Eatz LA

Written and Photographed by Shakeh Galstian
It’s been a tedious, hard week at work. You’re tired. You’re hungry. You’re thinking of how to make the next couple days worthwhile. What better way to ring in the weekend than to treat yourself to a nice Saturday or Sunday afternoon brunch?  There are several brunch spots scattered all over Los Angeles, but have you ever thought of making brunch yourself? Well, I sure did. As an avid brunchee’ who has scoured many restaurants offering delicious breakfast pairings with champagne, I decided to make brunch myself for a change. That's how I came across Eatz LA located on 612 N La Brea Ave, Los Angeles CA 90036.

Eatz offers hands-on cooking classes to anyone looking to spice things up in the kitchen and learn a few new tips and tricks. Their meal preparation classes include steak, pasta, paella, pizza, and the one that caught my eye: Weekend Brunch.

This specific class was scheduled to take place on a Sunday afternoon between 12-3pm. My friend and I arrived to the location on La Brea Ave., with plenty of street parking in front and residential parking in the back streets. We were greeted by our instructor, Niki, who prepared mini cheese rolls and iced tea for our arrival.

As soon as you walk in, you immediately feel like you are in a welcoming environment as your eyes are directed to the sign: “Meals and Memories Are Made Here!” written in bright red letters, directly above the communal table with all of the cooking tools and ingredients set up.

To the right was a chalkboard with the afternoon’s specials to be made including: Eggs en Cocotte with Smoke Salmon and a side of Sweet Potato Hash, Sweet Cream Cheese and Berry Stuffed French Toast and, last, but not least—my personal favorite on the menu: Peach Bellini, a delicious mixture of peach puree and your choice of prosecco or champagne.

Whether you want to drink and have fun or master advanced cooking techniques, Eatz is the place for you.

To start, Niki went over some basic skills like the proper way to hold a knife and salt food. We then began making the Peach Bellini’s, which were free-flowing for the duration of the class. In making our two breakfast meals, our instructor Niki was incredibly interactive and helpful, not letting any member of the group feel left out. The class ranged from cooks with years of experience at home to people who only know how to use a microwave. Regardless of which one you are, there is room for you.

In the end, we were able to indulge in the food we spent time making and each bite was a sense of delicious accomplishment. The Eggs en Cocotte with Smoked Salmon was the perfect savory breakfast meal. Baked eggs, smoked salmon, in a tasteful milky sauce topped with chopped parsley to add an extra, bright green decorative touch. The dish was paired with a side of deliciously seasoned, crispy Sweet Potato hash, which was the perfect addition to complete the breakfast.

To satisfy your sweet tooth, Chef Niki assisted us in making French Toast filled with Sweet Cream Cheese and Berries which was a fresh and different take on the traditional, plain French Toast breakfast. The brittle outer layer of the toast and warm creamy filling made each bite a treat. The best part of it all was that you were the Chef behind these delightful flavors.

 Atmosphere: 8/10
The instructor makes the class extremely enjoyable and easy to follow, but the space itself is quite small and so is the cooking space. The table can accommodate 10-16 people tightly. Each “station” is shared between two people. Though it’s tight, the intimate nature of the cooking class allows for a better, more efficient and memorable learning experience.

Good for groups/private events: 10/10
This is not only an opportunity to advance your cooking skills but it’s a great activity to be used as a bonding experience for couples looking to try something new and exciting or for double dates with their friends. It’s also great for team building exercises within companies.

Price: $$$
Although it seems quite pricey costing $105 per-person per-class, it is a 3 hour experience in which you learn a lot, eat delicious foods you just made yourself and have leftovers to take home and share with your loved ones.
