Saturday February 27, 2016 -The Burbank Philharmonic Orchestra presented their 25th Anniversary Gala Concert at The Ambassador Auditorium in Pasadena. Elida Berry-Donat, was one of two Woodbury students selected to create formal gowns for orchestra soloists.

Taking personal inspiration from French fashion designer Christian Lacroix, known for avant-garde, bold, and odd colors, it was an easy task for Elida Berry-Donat to design the gown. Elida attended Ramon C. Cortines School of Visual and Performing Arts in Downtown Los Angeles which was a huge contribution to molding her into the fashion designer she is today.

Where do you see fashion heading in the future?
"I see fashion heading into a gender neutral direction. More and more people are becoming comfortable with themselves and are willing to take risks."

"I definitely see more men and women being brave and going outside of the box, and not worrying about what they wear because of what society thinks but wearing certain things because that is what they want to wear."

What was the most challenging aspect of the project?
“Annie Jacobs-Perkins is a cellist and she has to sit in a chair with her legs open to play her instrument, so I had to modify the gown to make sure she was comfortable and did not have to worry about anything else except playing her instrument."

What do you love about fashion?

“I love that you can choose your character for the day. You can decide if you are feeling lazy or if you are a rockstar. It is a great way to express yourself without saying very much which is easier for me.”

"I get a lot of inspiration from people watching. Los Angeles is filled with so many interesting people. I love to see how each person likes to express themselves and how they decide what persona they want."

What did you enjoy about this project?
"It was really interesting to work with an actual client and talk about functionality because the dress actually had to be worn and performed in. It was also really great to be able to ask the client what she wanted and try to put my own spin on it while not letting what I thought would be best take over and drown out the ideas of my client.  The final result is the best part because all that hard work is coming to life and I am happy she loved the dress and it is even more of a win because someone other than yourself enjoys the creation.”

What advice would you give to future designers?
"I would say design what you want and develop your own style. Yes, we go to school to learn about drawing and aesthetics and what looks good together but when it comes down to it you should be designing what is true to you and your tastes. What you make shouldn't look like what everyone else is making."

"You can gain knowledge and skills from others. It is important to be unique and express yourself the way you want to express yourself."
