Rock'n Egg Cafe

Written & Photographed by
Cristina Coronel & Alyssa Pieprzyca

Close to my home in Northeast Los Angeles, on Eagle Rock Blvd. there used to be a quaint, little (expensive) organic cafe that died out about a year ago.  This cafe, which charged $20 for two tiny pancakes, drew out hipsters from everywhere, and like a random tattoo/bearded swarm, they stole all the parking and took up every spare corner of street space.  Luckily for me and not for the hipsters, that cafe closed. Now there’s a new cafe in its place. Rock’n Egg Cafe is much more my style of place, and so far, has attracted a more normal-sized crowd of mellow customers. With any luck, it won't catch on with trend chasers, and will stay a hidden gem.

The cafe itself is painted red. It stands alone, not connected to any other buildings but just a few doors down from a Crossfit and a recently closed furniture store. There are a few seats out front under some umbrellas, which is convenient for those LA people who are always bringing their dog(s) to breakfast. Once we walked in, on our left we saw that we could seat ourselves or if we were just wanting coffee and a muffin to go, we could order straight ahead at the register and be on our way.
Once we sat down, Marvin brought us menus and gave us a minute, that’s when I heard KROQ Radio playing from the speakers. Since it was an early Tuesday morning, the restaurant was quite lonely which was nice for us to have some privacy while we talked.

On the front cover of the menu, they mention how this location is in opening run which means the menu is a bit different compared to their Downtown Los Angeles location. There is a variety of food from breakfast burritos to lunchtime hamburgers. Rock’n Egg Cafe offers alternative food items to accommodate vegetarian customers as well. One thing they are lacking is the amount of drink options for breakfast. Coffee, water, and orange juice were the different drinks offered. Additionally, the menu did not list their available drinks which makes it hard for customers to know what options they get to pick from.

Our food came out in a decent amount of time for us to enjoy. The staff asked us a few times if they could get us anything else after our food was brought out to the table. There were different salsa options, including a homemade salsa for those who enjoy a bit of spice in their food. The plate of pancakes was decorated with a nutella smiley face to bring joy to anyone’s morning. The fluffiness from the pancake stack was as soft as a cloud. The other plate of scrambled eggs topped with avocado with a side of hashbrowns and toast did not have a special face, but it was still delicious especially with their homemade salsa.

The price range was appropriate for the amount of food we received. Small restaurants like these can sometimes be overpriced; however, Rock’n Egg Cafe offers good food for a good price. The one struggle we all face in Los Angeles is parking. There is only street parking available which can be difficult to find since there are neighboring business along the street. If you do go, try to carpool with your friends so it does not take forever to park your car!

Overall Rock’n Egg Cafe is a nice spot for those that enjoy small restaurants and a relaxed eating environment. The staff is friendly and the food is delicious for your group of friends to go enjoy. Hopefully this location stays open after their opening run so they are able to offer even more options for their customers.
Rating Scale
Atmosphere: A casual, welcoming, very relaxed hole-in-the-wall kind of restaurant.
Sound: Moderate.
Recommended Dishes: Half order of the Nutella cakes with two eggs and your choice of meat (you can substitute with hash browns if you’re someone like me who doesn’t eat meat).
Price: $ (inexpensive)
