Beach Sanctuary:
Treebones Resort

Written and Photographed by Dina Alyasi
Somewhere above the picturesque winding roads of the Pacific Coast Highway through Big Sur, to my surprise, I saw a barely visible sign on a barely visible gate with the words Treebones Resort and an arrow leading up a never-ending, snaking dirt lane leading to what was to become a place that, to this day, captured my soul like no other.

I was greeted with a smiling face and nothing but positive energy from this family-owned dream in the Big Sur Mountains. I have never been so distracted by the beauty of a simple place such as this and hardly heard anything the lady said as I was mesmerized by the nature and surroundings. Less than 5 minutes later I was given the key to the room, escorted to a golf cart, and taken to my dwelling, Yurt #5; and what a dwelling it was!!! A Yurt that puts the idea of any other Californian Glamping to shame!!! From the open skylight to the fluttering of the canvas of the Yurt with the wind… to the view… oh the view… It was perfect.

I quickly unpacked my things and had to run out and discover what else was in store for me to see before I sit down to savor in the unspoiled and stunning Big Sur ocean sunset. What I found on my little adventure was nothing short of unbelievable. A treehouse made of nothing but large twigs, called the Twig Hut, a garden that supplies the kitchen, and a swing that made it seem like I was soaring into the Pacific Ocean. This is where I spent my time until the Sunset was over, and the stars blanketed the sky. I have never seen the stars this bright and clear, was it because of the light in the city? Was it the pollution? Honestly, at that moment, I didn’t care, I was, there is no other way to put it, hypnotized. Walking back after it had gotten dark, I went for dinner. Remember how I said everything was grown in-house, well… you can taste it with every bite; the food was mouth-watering. After dinner it was a struggle to walk back to my Yurt, I didn’t want to miss a moment of being here… but I promised myself that, and this is not me, I would wake up before sunrise to go on a short hike and enjoy the sunrise… if the sunset was beautiful, I did not want to miss that!

Waking up around 5am, I quickly put on my clothes and hiking shoes and went out. I won’t lie, it was cold, really cold; but that wasn’t going to stop me at all. I went on my short, but scenic hike around the estate and came back to where I started watching the sunset the day before and watched the most striking sunrise that came over the mountains lighting up the waters in all shade of orange, purple, and yellow. When this orchestra of nature was over, I headed back to the main house to have coffee, freshly pressed juice, and a light breakfast before it was that dreaded time to go. After breakfast I grabbed my clothes, bathed in the communal (gym-like) but clean shower (men and women separate of course), put my clothes on, packed, and headed to check-out. Even just being here for one night the owners felt like I was part of the family and treated me as such; the service was amazing. After checking-out, I packed my things into the car barely holding the tears in my eyes for leaving such a beautiful place… but I knew that it was on to the next day of adventure. I will never forget the Treebones Resort and the people there, and I will be back… I promise!
