Locals Only:
Tristan Jennings

Written by Mohammed Abu Obaid
Serious but fun to be around, you can see how London School of Economics student Tristan Jennings gets his easygoing side being from Santa Monica. His serious nature and great time management abilities come from living in London and Zurich. His international traits have helped him a lot with communicating with others and to build a greater understanding about what goes on around him.

One of my first memories of him is going to the Topanga Mountains, exploring nature. Even though he was on vacation with friends, he was able to share his thesis ideas with us while also enjoying his time. This kind of attitude showed me his capabilities in balancing between work and life. He is a great example of being hard-working and fun to be around.

Spending time with Tristian helped me to gain insights on new interesting ideas. Tristian is a good friend who can offer valuable and wise advice. We can spend hours sharing our meaningful thoughts and it will noticeably have a positive impact on my life. I’m glad  this article can reveal a little bit about him and his life in Los Angeles:

Tell us more about yourself and what do you do?
I have lived in Los Angeles for a large part of my life, and have explored some of the various neighborhoods and scenes during my stay. It is in some way the place I call home. I studied many different subjects as I was curious but couldn’t focus; in the end I decided to start a career in finance. I’m now further down this path and also living between LA and San Francisco.

What advice would you give someone starting out?
First, almost everything is learnable and it’s never too late, so don’t worry about where you are starting from now or be worried that your grades aren’t what you had hoped. You can and should keep learning throughout the rest of your life.

Second, discover some fundamental values around how you would like to live your life and contribute to society, then just get going. Life means hard work but there is a lot to choose from, and no path is fixed.

Third, focus on learning the skills you will need for later on in your career, take a job that teaches you those skills even if it is not at the company or place you had hoped.

What are some challenges you faced in your career?
Switching costs. I learned early on that I could use skills for related roles that I may like more as a whole. For example I used analytical skills and financial modeling in multiple roles, and changing roles was easier in that regard. But searching for a new job in a more challenging field requires focus and investing time and money. It’s always worth it though.

How do you balance between work and life?
I work sporadically, so sometimes I’m switching between work and free time a lot during one day, especially during the pandemic. That being said, I try and do important stuff for myself and for work early on during the day when I have the mental energy, and then in the evening I just stick to mindless activities.

Do you have any advice for people just moving to LA?
You will likely feel lonely in the beginning. You may not find your closest friends early on, but each acquaintance can introduce you to more people, so be patient and try to go out a little more than is comfortable for you early on. Be proactive in building connections, and choose carefully which relationships to invest in.

What do locals know that tourists don’t?
Don’t try and travel anywhere between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m., and 4p.m. and 6 p.m. On the weekends, go to the beach early or half the day will be in traffic. Seriously.

Where do you go to relax or find peace in the city?
There is a spot in Palos Verdes, around a 45 minute drive from the west side. It’s at the end of Punta Place and you can see all the way across to Santa Monica on a clear day with the mountains of Malibu behind.

What do you love about the place you live?
Many people are entrepreneurial and are taking great risks compared with the rest of the world. Those who aren’t, tolerate the risk seekers and the friendly and optimistic mindset of everyone supports self-discovery

Interviewing Tristan was a great experience for me.  Talking to him is always interesting and there’s always new information to learn. Driven by his curiosity for the city, you can find Tristan everywhere.
