Tell us more about yourself and what do you do?
I have lived in Los Angeles for a large part of my life, and have explored some of the various neighborhoods and scenes during my stay. It is in some way the place I call home. I studied many different subjects as I was curious but couldn’t focus; in the end I decided to start a career in finance. I’m now further down this path and also living between LA and San Francisco. What advice would you give someone starting out? First, almost everything is learnable and it’s never too late, so don’t worry about where you are starting from now or be worried that your grades aren’t what you had hoped. You can and should keep learning throughout the rest of your life. Second, discover some fundamental values around how you would like to live your life and contribute to society, then just get going. Life means hard work but there is a lot to choose from, and no path is fixed. Third, focus on learning the skills you will need for later on in your career, take a job that teaches you those skills even if it is not at the company or place you had hoped. |
What are some challenges you faced in your career?
Switching costs. I learned early on that I could use skills for related roles that I may like more as a whole. For example I used analytical skills and financial modeling in multiple roles, and changing roles was easier in that regard. But searching for a new job in a more challenging field requires focus and investing time and money. It’s always worth it though. How do you balance between work and life? I work sporadically, so sometimes I’m switching between work and free time a lot during one day, especially during the pandemic. That being said, I try and do important stuff for myself and for work early on during the day when I have the mental energy, and then in the evening I just stick to mindless activities. |
