Fro-Zen: Yoga-Urt

You might be wondering, “How do you expect me to believe that frozen yogurt is healthy?” Well, what if I told you that every product sold is non-soy, dairy free, and always fresh frozen yogurt. In fact, Yoga-Urt is what I call an organic frozen yogurt because all the ingredients are natural. Yoga-Urt packs a healthier punch than your typical frozen yogurt places like Pinkberry or Yogurtland. The petite, decadent frozen yogurt joint has been the talk of the city of Glendale, California. Its location is in Kenneth Village with the place having an almost hipster vibe. This healthy decadent sweet confection has become very popular in my household. As a frequent visitor myself, I have not only got my friends to become fans of Yoga-Urt, but I’ve somehow managed to get my mom to become addicted as well. My mom is the type of individual that will not eat anything that is vegan, but every time I visit on my own, she requests for me to bring home a pint.

Frozen yogurt has and will continue to be a popular dessert that is adored by the masses. However, there can be a slight problem: a lot of frozen yogurts tend to be filled with preservatives and lots of sugar. In a way, I consider it to be a double-edged sword because, sure yogurts are healthier options compared to ice cream, but the ingredients just don’t match up to Yoga-Urt’s house-made yogurt that is fresh and clean. Furthermore, people who want to consume frozen yogurt are limited because they can be lactose intolerant or vegan. With the emergence of Yoga-Urt in July of 2015, this decadent frozen yogurt is a dynamic sweet-tooth joint that can satisfy one’s taste buds from the texture of healthiness and the organic sweet taste. Thus, it creates the perfect balance. Ever since the opening day of Yoga-Urt, they have been successfully expanding, so much so that they opened up another location in Echo Park, Los Angeles.
While Yoga-urt is mainly known for their popular frozen yogurt, they also sell other products in case people are looking for something new to try or generally are not a fan of frozen yogurt. Furthermore, since Yoga-Urt is designed to bring health and great taste with the special flavors only being limited to about one-to-one-and-a-half weeks. The reason why is because since every product is house-made, the owner has to not only make more, but also bring out the new flavors. In a sense, the flavors are rotating each week. Again, as I have an addiction for sweets, I paid a visit to Yoga-urt three times. On September 5th, I went to Yoga-Urt and, luckily, the store had one of my favorite flavors, Mint Magic. My goodness, in comparison to other mint flavored yogurt or ice cream, the Mint Magic at Yoga-urt overpowers the others in my opinion. Why? Because the flavor itself actually tastes like the yogurt had bits and pieces of mint leaves. The aroma from taking one whiff punctures through your nostrils as if you were smelling bundles of mint leaves. I always wondered what made their mint so authentic. I found out one of their main ingredients in creating this balance of sweet and bitter mint flavor is the use of avocados. Usually, when I select the Mint Magic, I purchase it without adding any toppings. Each bite of the Mint Magic presents a pungent scent, as if you are brushing your teeth with a strong mint scent toothpaste. Though mint flavored desserts are loved by the masses, the Mint Magic at Yoga-urt is definitely a recommendation for the hardcore fans of mint because of its authenticity and bold taste.

In terms of the atmosphere inside the space, it’s always mellow and manifesting a sense of distressing. You would think it would be loud, but the place has three different seating areas. There’s seating outside of the entrance, inside the shop, and a back patio for more of a bigger crowd. Usually, families would be occupying the back patio because they come in with a grand party. Yoga-Urt’s atmosphere is excellent because the moment you enter this dairy-free frozen yogurt joint, the warm and friendly environment brings peace to the customers.

Overall,  I would not only highly recommend this place, but my rating would be a near perfect score, 4.9/5. The only reason why it’s a 4.9 is because of the price range, and the extra charge for the toppings. It’s totally understandable because even the toppings are all vegan, so it makes sense with each additional charge for one topping. I think some of the side desserts prices are a little over the top. For example, the cookie sandwich that Rocky bought is $8, and a slice of their pie is $6.75. Other than that, it’s a near perfect shop because the place conjures up a fun, and stress-free environment. But more importantly the theme of healthy organic frozen yogurt is what makes the masses come back for even more; even if they are not vegan.

Then, three days after, I paid a visit to Yoga-Urt again. This time, I went with a good friend of mine named Rocky. I was worried that he might not enjoy it, however, when I mentioned the place to him before we went, he told me that he’s been there before. Upon our arrival, I was very excited to go back and see my number one favorite flavor present: Radiant Golden Rose. Rocky opted to go with a cookie sandwich. Unlike the Mint Magic where it has an actual mint taste, Radiant Golden Rose presents itself with a more diverse palate of flavors that is complex to interpret. The best way to interpret this unique flavor is that it almost has a presence of a sweet, flower-like taste. I think the use of rose water is the cause of the flower-like taste. In comparison to the Mint Magic, I would say the Radiant Golden Rose has a healthier taste because it's less sweet and light. In terms my recommendation of getting toppings, I always have to add toppings for this flavor such as, coconut flakes, and chopped pistachios. The reasoning is that the toppings are dense, and it completes the balance with the lightness from the yogurt and the denseness of the toppings. The toppings and the yogurt almost make me feel as if I was at Yellowstone National Park because all three components from the two toppings and the yogurt flavor has a relationship with nature.

Then a week later, I again paid a visit to Yoga-Urt. Only this time, I came with two friends. Again, I came with small uncertainty because I didn’t know if they would enjoy a vegan dessert joint. Since it had been a week, the flavors rotated where they took out the Radiant Golden Rose, and brought back Green Tea Tranquility, and a new flavor that I have not tried called Birthday Cake. Since, it was one of my friend’s first time trying Yoga-urt, I showed her the options they had. She opted to go for Strawberry Serenity with mini brownies, and strawberries as her toppings. I forgot to mention, if you’re an individual that is looking for more diversity in your yogurt, they allow you get multiple flavors in the same cup. Since I knew I was going to get the Green Tea Tranquility, I also wanted to explore my taste buds and ordered Birthday Cake with the green tea flavor. I also added coconut flakes and strawberries as my toppings. The moment I took the first bite of the mashup of two flavors, I immediately manifested a speechless reaction. I thought the combination of the two seemed unusual, but they complimented each other well. If I just ordered only Birthday Cake, I would’ve been disappointed because taking a separate bite left a really sweet taste that would have ruined my appetite. The two combined had the feeling of eating a cake while simmering it down with a green tea. That way you get sweet from the birthday cake, and the bitterness of the green tea. I just threw in the toppings because I wanted to make it stand out. Though my friend wasn’t able to finish the yogurt, her reaction was positive.
