Neighborhood Gem:
The Iliad Bookshop

Written and Photographed by Kandra Brooks & Maria Ordonez
In a busy, traffic filled town there a place of adventure. You can travel back in time, to the future, and around the world. Portals take you too many places of your wildest dreams, and become a place of comfort. Where is this door to the unknown? It’s at The Iliad Bookshop in Burbank. You are greeted by the friendly bookkeepers and cats who immediately judge your worthiness as you step into a reader’s wonderland. Stacks upon stacks of books that are placed upon each other. With each story overlapping there are books as big as your head and as old as the ancestors that came before you. Remembering the wonder I had reading my first word this bookshop reminds you how something as simple as sitting down with a couple of pieces of paper can take you to places you never imagined.

Kandra's Adventure

In the past, whenever I was presented with the idea to go to the library to read books, I had zero enthusiasm. I admired the idea of books but I never really liked to read them. Literature has definitely been the one area in my life that lacked effort and I never understood why.

Then, I was introduced to the Iliad Bookshop. When you drive up to the building, it has a vibrant European orange color with mural paintings and statues. Initially walking in, I felt overwhelmed, there were books everywhere, I had no idea where to start, so I picked a random aisle and started browsing.  I discovered books that ranged from classic novels with original bindings and signatures... to the histories of classic Disney and Warner Bros. characters.

Iliad Bookshop is  beautiful and offers a wide selection for its occupants to choose from. Every book has the option to be rented or bought for one’s own personal preference. Surprisingly, the book store has been in existence for over 30 years, but has not gained much acknowledgment within the Los Angeles area.  It's a store designed for every book lover, and there is no one that would not find their home among these books. I got the opportunity to ask a few brief questions to Bob Johnson, staff at the Iliad Bookstore.

How long has this bookstore been in existence?

This book store has been running for 30 years, it was 18 years in a different location.

Where was the book store located previously?
On the corner of Vineland next to the Odyssey building, that is how the book store got its name.

What is your favorite thing about working at the book store?
I enjoy reading and being around books, also being in contact with people who share similar interests.

What book would you recommend for anyone to read?
The Nobel Prize Winner: Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro.

What future hopes do you have for the book store?
I hope that the book store continues going because we are doing more business than ever before, and for a book store that is great. I hope it continues.

The environment of this place is like stepping into a book lover's dream but beware. While the cats that silently judge you, your allergies could be affected.

This location is definitely a plus! The Iliad is in the middle of Burbank's hustle and bustle. A relaxing rabbit hole in the middle of a crazy wonderland.
