Smell the Roses:
Chill Rollz

Greeted by a friendly worker, I entered the doorway of Chill Rollz in North
Hollywood. Chill Rollz is a family owned and operated business and proudly gets all their ingredients from local vendors in LA. According to their website: "We want you to CHILL when you enter, and not worry about preservative-filled syrups and powders to flavor ice cream, Because of this, we use only natural ingredients to create our creamy rolled ice creams."

Chill Rollz uses fresh fruit and milk, and does not use preservatives or chemical flavoring in their ice cream. Guests can try their specialty flavors, or even create their own masterpiece by using the wide variety of toppings offered!
The first thing I notice when I arrive is a giant mural of a cow that took up the entire wall of the right-side.

Brightly colored stripes were painted on the other wall along with a hanging chalk board menu. Bruno Mars was playing on the radio and Easter decorations were hanging from the ceiling. This already seems like a “chill” hangout spot, and I haven’t even gotten to the best part yet - the ice cream!

Flavors

Fro-ZEN, Creamy Dreamy Strawberry, and The Chill Roll, are only a few titles of the wide variety of flavors at Chill Rollz. If you are in need of some calming and relaxing ice cream, you may want to try Fro-ZEN. It's a heavenly blend of custard and green tea. It's topped with cinnamon, mochi, and pocky sticks. Creamy Dreamy Strawberry will take you to a fruity wonderland. Strawberry flavored ice cream combined with graham cracker crumbles and fresh strawberries, this will leave you feeling more than satisfied. The Chill Roll is one of Chill Rollz's staple flavors. A mix of cheesecake, raspberries, and custard, makes for a delightful dessert. It's topped with whip cream, raspberries, cheesecake bites, waffle sticks, sprinkles and drizzled with melted white chocolate.

The Process

Chill Rollz is known for their specialty flavored ice cream and shaping them into small rolls. I ordered Smell the Roses (Rose flavored ice cream) which cost $6.75 and then I heard my name called on the other side of the counter. I walk over and see a worker is ready to put on a show for me! First they put the flavored cream on a chilling platform and scrape it around until it’s frozen. Then they smooth the ice cream until its flat. Once it’s perfectly smooth, they use a spatula to scrape the ice cream and shape in into a roll. The rolls of ice cream are placed in a bowl and covered in various toppings, whip cream, and in my case, rose petals!

After taking a “basic millennial” amount of photos of
my ice cream, I tasted all its glory. The rose was refreshing and made me feel like it was a relaxing, summer day. The hint of vanilla and crunchy pistachios on top pulled the whole dessert together for a unique and perfect blend. When your sweet tooth kicks in, it's time to head to Chill Rollz!
